Upper Austria is one of the nine states of the Austrian Republic. It borders with Germany to the north, with Slovenia and Hungary to the east, and with Switzerland and Liechtenstein to the west.
The state has a population of 1.8 million people or 20% of Austria's total population. Upper Austria is dominated by mountains that are part of the Northern Limestone Alps, which are also called “the Alps” in popular usage.
This mountain range can be seen everywhere in Upper Austria, including in North Tyrol on its border with Italy. The most important rivers are Inn River and Danube River, which both run along Upper Austria's long borders to Germany and Slovakia respectively.
